Oil Analysis

Oil analysis tests compressor lubricant samples to detect metal particles, acids, and moisture indicating internal wear, contamination, or chemical breakdown in refrigeration systems. A simple laboratory analysis reveals component degradation invisible to visual inspection. Results guide decisions about component replacement versus continued operation, preventing catastrophic compressor failure.

Analysis Parameters

Laboratory tests measure acid number (TAN), moisture content (typically 100-500 ppm maximum), ferrous particle count (iron wear particles), and non-ferrous content (copper, aluminum from bearing surfaces). High acid numbers above 0.5 indicate oil breakdown requiring replacement. Ferrous content exceeding 100 ppm signals bearing wear. Moisture above 500 ppm risks acid formation and refrigerant-oil chemical reactions.

Maintenance Application

Oil analysis costs $50-150 per sample and typically takes 3-5 days for results. Most common in commercial chillers during quarterly maintenance but also valuable for large commercial compressors. Results indicating high metal content justify compressor replacement before bearing seizure occurs (estimated at $3,000-8,000 cost). Regular oil analysis extends commercial equipment lifespan by 5-10 years through early problem detection and preventive component replacement.
