R-407C

R-407C is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blend refrigerant designed as a near-drop-in replacement for R-22 in air conditioning and heat pump systems worldwide. This zeotropic blend (23 percent R-32, 25 percent R-125, 52 percent R-134a) entered commercial use in 1994 and became the second-most common R-22 replacement. R-407C maintains reasonable compatibility with existing mineral oil systems when properly managed, though polyol ester oils are recommended for optimal performance and equipment longevity.

Performance Characteristics

R-407C exhibits a temperature glide of approximately 4 to 6°F across phase-change conditions, requiring careful superheat and subcooling management during servicing. Discharge pressures are 10 to 20 percent higher than R-22, demanding system inspection before retrofit. Capacity is typically 95 to 98 percent of R-22 equivalent, with efficiency within 95 percent of original R-22 performance.

Phase-Down and Alternatives

R-407C faces phase-down under Kigali Amendment protocols, with mandatory reductions of 50 percent by 2030. Technicians increasingly retrofit systems with R-407C to R-32, R-448A, or R-454B for better long-term compliance. Existing R-407C equipment operates legally with reclaimed refrigerant during the transition period.
