R-448A

Last updated: March 11, 2026

R-448A is a low-global-warming-potential (GWP) hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend refrigerant designed as a long-term replacement for R-404A and R-507A in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems. This five-component blend (26 percent R-32, 26 percent R-125, 20 percent R-134a, 21 percent R-152a, 7 percent R-227ea) has a GWP of only 1,273 compared to R-404A’s 3,922, meeting strict environmental regulations while maintaining superior performance. R-448A entered commercial use in 2015 and is rapidly becoming the preferred refrigerant for new commercial cooling equipment.

Technical Advantages

R-448A delivers 5 to 10 percent higher cooling capacity and efficiency than R-404A in equivalent systems, reducing compressor strain and energy consumption. The refrigerant operates at slightly lower pressures than R-404A, allowing existing equipment retrofits with minor component changes. POE synthetic oil is required, and the blend has minimal temperature glide of 0.6°F for precise superheat control.

Installation and Compliance

R-448A is approved for conversion of R-404A and R-507A systems across North America and Europe. Technicians must flush systems thoroughly, replace drier cores, and verify component compatibility before charging. As commercial refrigeration equipment transitions to lower-GWP refrigerants, R-448A provides immediate compliance with regulatory mandates through 2030 and beyond.
