R-454C

Last updated: March 11, 2026

R-454C is a near-azeotropic HFO refrigerant blend with a GWP of 148, designed as a long-term replacement for R-22 and R-410A in air conditioning and heat pump applications. This low-GWP refrigerant offers significant environmental benefits while maintaining performance suitable for new equipment design and retrofit installations. Its designation as a lower-flammability refrigerant (A2L) requires specific safety protocols during handling.

Physical Properties and Operating Conditions

R-454C has a normal boiling point of -43°C and operates at pressures slightly lower than R-410A, reducing compressor and component stress. The refrigerant’s GWP reduction of 96% compared to R-410A aligns with phase-down regulations under the Kigali Amendment. It requires synthetic POE lubricants and operates effectively across temperature ranges typical of residential and commercial HVAC systems.

Installation and Regulatory Compliance

As an A2L flammability classification refrigerant, R-454C installation requires EPA certification and adherence to EPA Section 608 regulations. New equipment utilizing this refrigerant must incorporate safety features limiting charge quantities. This refrigerant represents the direction of future HVAC refrigerant development, balancing environmental protection with system performance requirements.
