R-744, commonly known as carbon dioxide (CO2), is a natural refrigerant with zero ozone depletion potential and a GWP of 1, representing the lowest possible environmental impact. While CO2 has been used as a refrigerant historically, modern applications focus on transcritical systems and cascade configurations that optimize its unique pressure-temperature characteristics. Its non-flammable and non-toxic properties make it inherently safe for most applications.

Operating Characteristics and Pressure Requirements

R-744 operates with a critical temperature of 31.1°C, requiring specialized high-pressure equipment rated for 1,000-5,000 psi depending on system design. Transcritical systems operate above the critical pressure, using gas coolers instead of traditional condensers. Cooling capacity efficiency varies significantly with outdoor temperature, requiring careful system design for optimal performance across seasonal conditions.

Emerging Applications and Technology Development

R-744 transcritical systems are increasingly implemented in European supermarkets and heat pump applications. The refrigerant’s zero environmental impact and abundance support long-term sustainability goals. Ongoing research continues improving system efficiency in moderate climate zones where historical performance limitations have restricted adoption.
