Refrigerant Blend

Last updated: March 11, 2026

A refrigerant blend is a mixture of two or more refrigerant components formulated to achieve specific cooling performance and thermodynamic properties. Blended refrigerants combine different fluids to optimize efficiency, operating pressure, and temperature characteristics for particular HVAC applications. Common blends include R-410A, R-407C, and R-454B, which mix multiple component refrigerants in precise proportions.

Composition and Performance

Refrigerant blends typically contain two to three base refrigerants in specific ratios by weight or mass fraction. These combinations are engineered to achieve desired pressure ratings, temperature ranges, and efficiency levels. For example, R-410A contains 50 percent R-32 and 50 percent R-125 by weight, operating at 1.6 times the pressure of R-22 systems.

Practical Applications

Blended refrigerants serve residential and commercial air conditioning, heat pumps, and refrigeration systems. They provide performance characteristics suited to specific compressor and equipment designs. System compatibility is critical, as blends cannot be mixed or interchanged with other refrigerants. Technicians must maintain proper charge quantities and composition accuracy during service procedures.
