Refrigerant Line Set

Last updated: March 11, 2026

A refrigerant line set is a pair or trio of insulated copper tubes that connect the outdoor condenser or heat pump unit to the indoor evaporator coil. The line set carries liquid refrigerant to the indoor unit and returns high-pressure vapor back to the outdoor unit. Line sets are pre-charged or charged on-site and are critical components in split-system air conditioning and heat pump installations.

Technical Details

Line sets consist of a liquid line (typically 3/8 inch diameter) and a suction line (typically 5/8 to 7/8 inch depending on system tonnage). Copper tubing must meet ASTM B280 specifications for pressure ratings between 350 to 700 PSI. Line length impacts system performance: runs over 50 feet require capacity corrections and suction line superheat adjustments. Standard line sets range from 25 feet pre-charged to custom lengths up to 150 feet.

Applications

Line sets serve mini splits, window units, central air systems, and heat pumps. Proper sizing prevents flash gas, oil return problems, and reduced efficiency. Quality line sets maintain system refrigerant charge integrity throughout the equipment lifespan.
