Room Air Cleaner

Last updated: March 11, 2026

A room air cleaner is a portable or wall-mounted device that filters and purifies air within a single room or small space. These units draw in ambient air, pass it through one or more filter stages, and return cleaned air to the room. Room air cleaners are commonly equipped with HEPA filters, activated carbon, or ionization technology to remove particulates, odors, and contaminants.

Technical Details

Room air cleaners typically deliver between 100 and 400 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow. Most units feature HEPA filters rated to capture 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger. Filter replacement is required every 6 to 12 months depending on usage and air quality. Noise levels generally range from 25 to 65 decibels.

Applications and Practical Significance

These devices are ideal for bedrooms, home offices, and living rooms where centralized ductwork is impractical or expensive. They are particularly valuable for allergy sufferers and individuals with asthma, helping reduce exposure to airborne allergens and irritants. Room air cleaners offer flexibility and can be relocated as needed, making them a cost-effective solution for targeted air quality improvement in residential and light commercial settings.
