Rotating Vane Anemometer

A rotating vane anemometer measures air velocity through a calibrated rotor assembly where blade rotation rate directly correlates to airflow speed. Also called a cup anemometer when using three-cup designs, this instrument provides reliable velocity measurement across a wide range of flow conditions. The rotating mechanism is mechanically simple, durable, and well-suited for extended field use in HVAC applications.

Technical Details

Rotating vane anemometers measure velocities from 50 to 5,000 fpm with calibration accuracy of 2-4%. The typical probe diameter is 0.75 to 1.5 inches. Modern electronic versions include averaging functions that sample rotation rate over 5-20 second periods, filtering out turbulent fluctuations. Instruments operate reliably from 32°F to 140°F without temperature compensation adjustments.

HVAC Applications

Technicians use rotating vane anemometers for supply register velocity verification, duct velocity measurement, exhaust fan performance checks, and system balancing across residential and commercial installations.
