Surge (Centrifugal Compressor)

An unstable operating condition in a centrifugal chiller compressor where refrigerant flow momentarily reverses direction due to insufficient flow rate relative to pressure rise, causing a loud bang and potential mechanical damage. Anti-surge controls prevent operation in regions where surge can occur.
