Type I Certification

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Type I Certification authorizes technicians to service small appliances containing less than 5 pounds of refrigerant, representing the entry-level EPA refrigerant handling credential. This certification covers basic knowledge of refrigerant handling, recovery procedures, and environmental regulations. Type I is the most commonly pursued certification among technicians beginning their HVAC careers.

Certification Scope

Type I covers small residential air conditioning units, window units, and portable cooling equipment. The exam focuses on fundamental refrigerant safety, proper recovery techniques, and Section 410 compliance basics. Technicians must demonstrate understanding of pressure-temperature relationships and system contamination prevention.

Career Path

Type I Certification serves as the foundation for technicians entering the HVAC field, with many advancing to Type II or Type III credentials. The certification requires passing the EPA exam, typically available through accredited training programs. Most HVAC companies require at minimum Type I certification for entry-level service positions handling small appliance air conditioning units and basic refrigeration work.
