Type III Certification

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Type III Certification authorizes technicians to service high-pressure air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including most residential and commercial HVAC systems using R-410A and other high-pressure refrigerants. This certification covers the majority of active HVAC systems in residential and light commercial applications. Type III represents the most commonly held EPA certification among HVAC professionals.

System Coverage

Type III covers split-system air conditioners, heat pumps, rooftop units, and high-pressure commercial refrigeration equipment operating above 10 psi on the low side. These systems represent approximately 90 percent of all stationary cooling equipment. Technicians must understand modern refrigerant properties, pressure-temperature relationships, and R-410A handling procedures.

Career Requirements

Most residential HVAC technicians obtain Type III Certification to perform standard air conditioning and heat pump service work. The certification exam covers high-pressure system diagnostics, proper evacuation and recovery procedures, and EPA compliance requirements. Type III holders can legally service the broadest range of common HVAC equipment found in residential and commercial buildings.
