Ventilation

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Ventilation is the controlled exchange of indoor and outdoor air, removing contaminants and maintaining acceptable indoor air quality and thermal comfort. Proper ventilation dilutes pollutants, removes moisture, and replenishes oxygen while managing temperature and humidity levels. ASHRAE Standard 62.1 specifies minimum ventilation rates of 15 cubic feet per minute per person for commercial spaces.

Ventilation Types and Systems

Natural ventilation relies on wind and temperature differences to drive airflow through operable windows and vents. Mechanical ventilation uses fans and ductwork to control airflow rates and distribution. Energy recovery ventilation (ERV) and heat recovery ventilation (HRV) systems capture heating or cooling energy from exhaust air, reducing energy consumption by 50-80% compared to standard ventilation.

Performance Standards and Health Benefits

Balanced ventilation systems maintain slightly positive indoor pressure while removing stale air through exhaust grilles. Inadequate ventilation allows CO2 to exceed 1,000 parts per million, reducing cognitive function and increasing SBS symptoms. Building codes typically require 0.3 air changes per hour minimum. Proper ventilation design improves occupant health, productivity, and thermal comfort while meeting regulatory compliance.
