Zone Control Board

Last updated: March 11, 2026

A zone control board is the central logic controller that manages multiple zone thermostats and coordinates zone valve operation in hydronic heating or cooling systems. This circuit board receives input signals from zone thermostats, evaluates demand across all zones, and sends appropriate 24V commands to zone valves and the primary heating or cooling source. Zone control boards enable simultaneous temperature management of 2 to 8 separate zones from a single boiler, furnace, or chiller.

Control Logic and Features

Advanced zone boards include priority zoning, where the system favors heating or cooling zones with the greatest temperature deviation. Common models support 4, 6, or 8 zone inputs with corresponding outputs to zone valves and primary equipment. Many boards feature adjustable dead band settings (typically 1 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit) to prevent short-cycling and unnecessary valve operation.

Installation and Troubleshooting

Zone control boards mount inside furnace cabinets or on walls near heating equipment. They require 24V power from a system transformer and low-voltage wiring connections to each zone thermostat and valve. Technicians verify proper operation by checking valve sequencing and ensuring thermostats communicate correctly with the board during heating and cooling calls.
