NATE Certification

Last updated: March 10, 2026

NATE (North American Technician Excellence) is the leading independent certification organization for HVAC technicians in the United States. NATE certification demonstrates verified competency in HVAC installation, service, and maintenance.

NATE offers certifications across multiple specialty areas including air conditioning, heat pumps, gas heating, oil heating, commercial refrigeration, and ground source heat pumps. Technicians must pass a Knowledge Areas of Technician Expertise (KATE) core exam plus a specialty exam.

While NATE certification is voluntary, it is widely respected by employers, manufacturers, and homeowners. Many HVAC manufacturers require NATE-certified technicians to maintain warranty coverage. Certification must be renewed every 5 years through continuing education.
